As many of you know, each year we strive to make improvements to our camp. This year, we were so busy leading up to camp that we completely forgot to post about the improvements we made in the Fillin’ Station.
After years of making physical improvements to our facilities we decided to make some major changes in another important area—where and what your kids eat. We brought in a consultant and made improvements to our campers dining experience in two important ways: 1) More varied and improved meals 2) Decreased camper waiting times.
Camp Champions doubled the size of our salad bars and increased the selections at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Did you know that breakfast this summer included fresh fruit, berries, mango, Greek (and regular) yogurts, granola and oatmeal in addition to the regularly served hot meal? The salad bars during lunch and dinner saw additions of hummus, couscous salad, Mediterranean salad, pasta salad with fresh herbs, and grilled chicken strips in addition to the traditional salad vegies and homemade dressings. We also set up two deli meat sandwich stations and added two serving lines, which reduced camper waiting time 65%. Campers, counselors and staff were all thrilled!
We continue to improve in our abilities to work with dietary needs as well. This summer we served vegetarians, vegans, gluten-free/celiac, dairy free and nut-free diets. As always, we provide Fruit Frenzy mid-morning (apples, pears, peaches) and Treat Time in the afternoon with treats baked daily in our Fillin station and a fruit option. Next summer we look forward to continuing on this path of varied, homemade and healthier meals.
